Why Build Green?
Occupant health and safety
Building green requires careful planning for both the interior and exterior of the building. It takes into consideration factors such as comfortable, efficient temperatures as well as air quality. It requires using products that don't give off unhealthy gases (paints, glues, etc.). Building safely also influences the layout of the property, ensuring that exits are clearly labeled, fire extinguishers are readily available, stairwells are well lit, and sidewalks are well constructed.
Energy and water efficiency
Building green reduces the need for natural resources for heating and air conditioning. We make the best use of sun and natural lighting to reduce the amount of heat and indoor lighting needed. We help conserve water by using low flow toilets, shower heads, urinals, etc. Our water fountain and faucet components are cooled and heated themselves, so running water doesn't take as long to get to temperature and isn't wasted down the drain. All these efforts create higher efficiencies and lower operating costs for the owners.
Decreased pollution and waste
When building green, we work to find unique, useful ways to reduce our carbon footprint and the greenhouse gases left behind. For example, we install refrigerators that don't use hazardous materials affecting the ozone layer and global warming. Water runoff outside the building is also directed in a way to prevent erosion with our rain water control solutions. Our buildings are also designed to encourage residents/owners to recycle more on their own, with extra waste bins for paper, plastics, metals, etc.
Use of recycled material
Recycling is crucial to the green building process. Whenever possible, we encourage recycling to cut down on the use of new raw materials. If there is an old building being demolished, we salvage as much as possible to prevent waste from ending up in landfills. These materials can often be repurposed and used in new building construction, such as flooring, wall treatments, window treatments, and more.
In the United States, buildings account for:
39% of total energy use.
12% of the total water consumption.
68% of total electricity consumption.
38% of the carbon dioxide emissions.
Personal and corporate responsibility
Why build green? It's the right thing to do. Everyone has a responsibility to help save the Earth. By building green, our impact on the environment is reduced and the carbon footprint that we leave behind is much smaller. We also help conserve the limited resources we have and save them for future generations.
