Frequently Asked Questions
Q.
What is LEED?
A.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System is a voluntary, consensus-based national rating system for developing high-performance, sustainable buildings. LEED addresses all building types and emphasizes state-of-the-art strategies in five areas: sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials and resources selection, and indoor environmental quality. Q.
Does the building have to be LEED Certified to be a 'green building'?
A.
No.
Q.
Does 'Green Building' cost more?
A.
Not if you use good building design practices. If you decide to build LEED with all of the accreditations that go with it, this will result in an investment that may increase expenses. If you choose not to be LEED Certified, you can still incorporate as many LEED principles that you would like in an effort to offset costs.
Q.
What is a Certified Green Contractor?
A.
The ABC Green Contractor Certification program is designed to document the merit shop construction community’s efforts to develop a sustainable workplace environment—both on and off the jobsite—as well as recognize ABC member firms that are green industry leaders.
